How do the alerts work?

Turn on "Alerts while driving". When you drive (above about 15 mph), the app warns you with a sound about 1.5 miles before a railroad crossing on the road you are on, and tells you if a passenger train is expected there around the time you arrive. If a train is expected, you get a reminder about 0.3 miles before the crossing. It works while Google Maps, Waze or Apple Maps is open.

I don't get alerts

Check that location access is allowed (iPhone: Settings › Crossing Watch › Location › While Using the App or Always; Android: Allow all the time), that notifications are allowed, and that the app shows the crossing data as downloaded. On iPhone, leave the app in the background while driving: if you swipe it away, alerts stop until you open it again. On Android, also allow the app to run without battery restrictions. Alerts cover passenger-train crossings in Florida.

Which trains are covered?

Brightline, Tri-Rail, SunRail and Amtrak, from official timetables and live feeds. Freight railroads publish no crossing times. The app shows estimated freight times on crossing pages where it has an estimate; they may be wrong or missing, and many freight trains are never seen, so no listed train never means no train. When train data is unavailable, you still get the crossing alert, and the app never says that no train is coming.

Safety

Crossing Watch is an aid, not a safety device. Train times are estimates. Always obey crossing signals, gates and signs, and never handle your phone while driving.
